Gout is an inflammatory arthritis triggered by uric acid crystals. It most commonly presents with a sudden swelling, redness and intense pain of the big toe (usually call podagra). Historically, it was considered a “royal” disease since it occurred most frequently in royalty who could afford all the foods that we now know can precipitate or worsen gout.
